different ceramics in various stages of completion. Almost all of the work on the shelves has been done by her students, whom she calls her "girls”, and she only does work to order now, or as gifts. “Most of what I do is instructing", she explains. When 1 visited her, she was working on a fox which she plans to give as a Christmas present.
The process used in making ceramics is long and painstaking. Molds are made of two or more pieces held together with rubber bands. When a mold is used, it is placed upside down with the hole where the clay is poured in on top. The clay used is very runny, and is poured into the mold with a device that resembles a gas-pump hose. The liquid clay is properly called “slip”, and when the mold is filled, it is left until it is as thick as desired. The excess is poured out. and the clay remains inside the mold until it is firm enough to remove. Once dry, the greenware, as it is now called, is cleaned and the mold lines are smoothed down. At this stage, it is extremely delicate. It is then bisque fired, and put into the kiln.
