To the editor:
It is with deepest regrets that I have to write this letter. The matter is pertaining to the disappearance of flowers form graves in the Sperryville Cemetery.
On at least three occasions flowers have been taken from the grave of my father. The latest occurred only three weeks after I had put a wreath there for Father’s Day. I thought it was possible that maybe the wind had blown them away but this time a wreath was mounted with long fingers to secure it to the head stone.
Passing by the cemetery at around 11 a.m. on this Sunday the flower was still in place. Checking again on our way back at around 7 p.m. it was gone.
I was raised in Rappahannock County and didn’t think that anyone here was low enough to steal or. take flowers from graveyards. Relatives and loved ones spend lots of money in flowers for ones that were so dear and close to them and it is a crying shame that this has to happen in a rural county that is so concerned over two brothers serving on the school board, that they don’t have time to take matters in hand concerning roads and maintenance for local cemeteries.
If it takes the Eastham brothers to get things going in this county for school board matters, maybe it would also be a good idea for them to step their bounds and suggest to the supervisors that something be done to up-grade the condition of our cemeteries also.
