1 hanks to volunteer spirit and community cooperation, the new Washinton Volunteer Fire Department building will be ready to use in late fall, reports the Rev. Jennings Hobson, president of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department.
The exterior of the building, which is located across from the Lake Motel, will be ready in about four months, he estimates, while the interior should be completed in the late spring of next year.
The building has been constructed almost entirely through volunteer effort. The tremendous community spirit and assistance of many town residents has allowed construction to progress rapidly and efficiently. Without the generosity of the volunteers, the building would have cost more than double its current price, and would have taken months longer to complete.
Paul Walker of Washington did the initial designing. After the groundbreaking in 1974, Jimmy Atkins dug the foundations for the price of the gas it took him to do his work. William Carrigan worked out a deal with Bobby Brown and Richard Eastham for labor at reduced pay.
Hobson says that throughout construction, a volunteer crew including Ed Bailey, Bobby Brown, Mary and Steve Bailey, Mark Bailev, Tommy Starks, RichardEastham, Brad Fisher, “Yogi” Bear, Charles Manson, John Norman and Brian Huff did most of the work.
