Scaled Results
In fact, however, results of the reading portion of the competency exam given this spring were scaled to bring a score of 65 percent correct up to a passing grade of 70 percent.
Dr. Claude Sandy, associate director for testing from the State Department of Education, acknowledged that raw scores on the reading portion of the competency exam given in the spring had been converted to standard of scaled scores. He maintained this was done to achieve the same level of difficulty as on the fall tests.
The reading exam administered in both spring and fall included 60 items. On the fall test. Dr. Sandy said, a student had to answer 42 questions correctly for a passing grade of 70 percent. On the spring test, 39 correct answers contributed the same passing grade of 70 percent once the results were scaled.
Dr. Sandy emphasized that the achievement level represented by a passing score on the spring test was at least as high or higher than the achievement level needed to pass the fall test.
He reported that the index figure for “level of difficulty” was 1.120 for a passing score with 42 correct answers out of 60 questions on the fall test.
On- the reading test given in the spring, 39 correct but of 60 represented a higher 1.195 "degree of difficulty,” he noted.
