the Virginia General Assembly, all students must pass minimum competency tests in reading and math before receiving a high school diploma. The graduating class of 1981 is the first to be affected by the mandate.
Ninth graders who failed to achieve a passing score of at least 70 percent on one or both sections will have three more opportunities to master the competency tests. Students who pass the exam the first time do not have to take it again.
