Virginia-bred horses brought more than $5.5 million during the Saratoga Yearling Thoroughbred sales last week, Jim Sharp, equine specialist with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, reports.
The 38 horses, all sold during the sale’s first three days, brought an average of $145,132 each. With one day of auctioning remaining, 114 horses from other states had sold for $9,984,000, or an average of $87,579 per horse. Sharp said.
Several of the Virginia yearlings were purchased by foreign companies and individuals for racing and breeding. Among the foreign buyers was the British Bloodstock Agency of Ireland, whose representatives paid $1.4 million last month for Nijinsky II, Virginia-bred offspring of
