Edward Pawley, who lives at Rock Mills where the Thornton, Rush and Covington Rivers converge, confirmed that the flood waters rose dangerously high in a very short time. Pawley's driveway leads off a gravel road parallel to the river just next to the Rock Mills bridge.
Because the flat section of the road often floods, Pawley said he keeps an eye on the water level and moves his car down the driveway and futher up the road onto higher ground when the river touches the underpinnings of the bridge.
Pawley reported that he kept his usual watch last Tuesday and went to gather overnight necessities for himself and his wife Helen as soon as the water level reached the underpinnings.
He estimated that he took just 15 minutes to load the car. In that short period, the river climbed halfway up the Pawley’s drive—a distance of
