The V arsity Panthers lost a thriller last Friday against the Madison Mountaineers, 40-39.
The Panthers went ahead in the January 18 game before the contest even started. Center Gay Leake, leading scorer for both the Panthers and the Skyline District, connected on a technical shot. The foul was awarded after a Madison player hung on the rim of the basket when he tried to dunk the ball during warm-ups.
Larry Settle sent RCHS up by three with an easy bank shot after the game officially began. But Madison capitalized on three Panther tum-overs and held the lead until Mike Leake's shot at the buzzer climaxed a four comer stall that would have made Dean Smith proud and ended the quarter with the score 10-10.
Madison jumped ahead by six at the start of the second quarter. Inspired by blocked shots from the two Leakes, RCHS rallied. With a minute left in the half. Dean Wilson scored, hustled down court to pull in a defensive rebound, then passed to Larry Settle ^-arho tossed the ball back to Wilson for a lay-up. pulling Rappahannock to within three. 19-22. at halftime.
Mike Leake produced the first score for RCHS two minutes into the second half but the Panthers had already lost their edge and were down, 21-26. Turnovers kept Rappahannock from pulling
