The usually inflexible state bureaucracy has bent a little and will allow Dr. R. S. LeGarde, regional health department director, to stay at his post after he reaches mandatory retirement age.
LeGarde, who turns 70 in May, is highly regarded in the counties he serves, judging from laudatory letters of support sent by five boards of supervisors in pressing for a retirement age waiver.
Governor John Dalton personally approved an extension for LeGarde until June 30 at full status and until December 31 in an advisory capacity, according to Dr. James B. Kenley, head of the state health department. If an adequate replacement is not found, LeGarde may stay on the job indefinitely.
"I’m officially retired as of July 1 but I’ll be available until my successor is found,” said LeGarde last week. "Right now, that might not be the easiest thing to arrange."
