The NBC film used operating practices at a New York plant run by Getty Oil to illustrate the indifference of industry to dangers posed by working with nuclear power. The plant, now closed, reprocessed spent fuel rods from nuclear reactors. In running the plant, transient workers were exposed to dangerously high doses of radiation, absorbing in a few weeks the maximum dosage set by safety standards for an entire year. Questioned by an NBC reporter, a spokesman for the company explained that use of transitory workers for jobs that included exposure to dangerously high levels of radiation was standard practice designed to protect regular employees.
The film noted that the government is currently exploring the possibility of using mines in the salt flats of Carlsbad, New Mexico, as permanent repositories for intermediate level nuclear wastes. No one yet knows the effect radioactive wastes will have on the water soluble salt, the documentary pointed out. The Carlsbad area is mined extensively for potash, a mineral used for fertilizer. One such mine adjoins the site of the proposed repository, posing a possible threat to fertilizer that is spread over farms all across the country.
