Superintendent William Bloomer acknowledged that fire drills aren’t held in Rappahannock school as often as regulations require. He noted that drills are supposed to be conducted at least once a week during the first month of school and then at least once a month for the rest of the term.
While attending classes recently at the high school. Eastham continued, he found one of the doors intended as a fire exit padlocked with a chain. He demanded to know why the door wasn’t opened when directional arrows from several classrooms indicated it should be used in case of fire.
Bloomer replied that it is standard practice in most school divisions to regularly hold fire drills with some exit doors locked. No one can predict where a fire will break out, he said, and no matter where a blaze occurs, it will probably block at least one fire exit. Holding drills with doors locked gives
