The Rappahannock Panthers accomplished last Wednesday night what no other Panther team has ever done. They had won nine games in a season and went beyond the first round of the Skyline tournament, defeating the Luray Bulldogs in overtime, 54-53.
The Panthers looked doomed in the first quarter against, a strong Luray team when they were down after a minute and a half, 0-6. Greg Bright put Rappahannock on the scoreboard after two minutes, but the Panthers lacked drive in shooting and trailed 8-18 at the end of the quarter.
In the second period the Panthers had gained confidence and with the combined shooting power of Gary Leake and Jimmy Tomko and the iron defense 6f the team. Luray was held scoreless for four minutes. Rappahannock climbed to within four points and held the margin for the rest of the quarter with a 20-24 halftime score.
The Panthers lost their composure in the third and began turning the ball over on careless passes and failed to control the rebounding. The Bulldogs, veterans of the tournament, held the Panthers off for three minutes and took a ten-point lead, 30-20. With Greg Bright’s rebounding finesse and drives for baskets, the Rapps went into the final quarter down, 33-39.
