At last Tuesday’s special session, the Rappahannock school board backed down from an earlier decision to ask the supervisors for additional funds for fire alarm systems at the elementary and high schools.
Instead, the board members agreed to use over $8,000 appropriated for capital outlay and maintenance to repair and install the alarms.
Both the state fire marshal and the insurance company that provides fire coverage on the buildings have described the elementary school’s system as totally inadequate. The school currently uses bells for a fire alarm, the same bells that can be set off only from the main office and that also signal lunch, class changes and dismissal at the close of the school day.
The high school has a fire alarm system which meets state specifications but is inoperable due to vandalism that has short circuited wiring for the buzzer alarms.
The bid from Standard Electric Time accepted by the board last Tuesday estimates repairs to the high school sytfem at $1,663 including labor if the present wiring can be reused.
