Rappahannock schools have personnel and program needs in addition to serious space requirements, according to Ford. An in-school suspension program, similar to one in Orange County funded with Law Enforcement Assistance Administration funds, should be considered for Rappahannock as part of meeting the state mandate for alternative education,. Ford maintained.
He reported that local representatives on the Planning District’s Criminal Justice Advisory Council are currently investigating possibilities that Rappahannock may be able to secure LEAA money for an in-school suspension program here.
“We need a nurse at both schools.” Ford continued, noting that elementary students on prescription drugs now have to take their dosages without any trained supervision.
The elementary school has a single physical education teacher who must handle classes with as many as 60 students. Ford noted that there’s no phys ed program at all for kindergarten classes and only a half-time program for first graders due to insufficient personnel.
On behalf of the RCEA, Ford called for a special education coordinator. With the current program fdr learning disabled students, “the special ed teacher tries to handle part of it, the . s is ant superintendent tries to handle part of it, the secretary at the elementary school tries to handle part of it—there’s no coordination,” Ford said.
In addition, he noted, Piedmont regional school will discontinue its LD classes next year and local students currently attending there will have to be served in Rappahannock.
Ford said an additional secretary is needed at the high school to help in the central office, guidance and libary. He noted that students are currently providing a little relief by picking up some of the typing work.
