Sherertz stated that he’d heard the argument about everyone—not just teachers—hurting from inflation. “But we’re not all hurting equally,” he said.
He cited figures supplied by the RappahannockRapidan Planning District Commission that show the median income in Rappahannock increased from around $7,000 to more than $14,000—a jump of 95 per cent—between 1974 and 1979.
During the same five years, teachers’ salaries in the county improved by only 39 per cent while the cost of living climbed 50 per cent, according to Sherertz. "So lots of people in this county are staying ahead of inflation,” he pointed out.
If money to fund teacher budget requests is not available without a tax increase, the school board should consider going to the supervisors to ask for such an increase, Sherertz maintained.
"I appeal to you to make your request to the supervisors based on need—not on presumed ability or on what you think the supervisors will approve,’’ he said, to the board members.
Sherertz concluded by noting that out of 135 school districts in Virginia, Rappahannock is ranked seventh in local ability to pay for education and 93rd in effort.
