Next Wednesday evening, March 5, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors will consider two ordinances aimed at controlling illegal road hunting. One. if passed will make it illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun while walking on a public right-of-way without written permission from landowners on both sides of the road. The second ordinance prohibits carrying a loaded rifle or shotgun while in a motor vehicle on a public right-of-way. The proposed ordinances are not gun control laws. They do not seek to prohibit guns. They prohibit instead carrying ammunition in the chamber of the gun and that only while the gun is in clearly specified locations.
Most sportsmen are familiar with the National Rifle Association and its unbending opposition to anything that smacks of gun control. Proposing gun control to the NR A is like waving a red flag in front of a bull. It stands to reason then that if the NRA is behind legislation that relates to guns, the legislation can’t be interpreted as gun control.
The NRA supports the type of ordinance proposed for Rappahannock In its ten commandments of hunter safety, the NRA includes a prohibition against carrying loaded rifles and shotguns in a motor vehicle.
