the era of “The Little Red Schoolhouse” and private family education, as one of the county’s two public schools. At that time, the Sperryville school consisted of a single clapboard building of four rooms which prior to the construction of U. S. 211, faced the Thornton River. In 1925, with the new road coming through, the building—now enlarged by four more rooms—had to be relocated, and was positioned as it stands today, facing the mountains.
Transportation at that time included no eeat rows of yellow school buses. Instead, a horse-drawn open Dayton filled the school’s local transportational needs—a more scenic way to travel, perhaps, but one much less suited to fall and winter chills.
