tt iicii tier iiusuanu weiii back in the house. Thompson threatened to break down the bathroom door, according to Mrs. Atkins. She said the deputy opened the unlocked „i door, stuck his blackjack into her husband's belt and twisted it, breaking the belt. She said she also witnessed Thompson shoving her husband into the police car with his foot in Atkins’ stomach. She maintained that at no time during the struggles were her husband's hands on Thompson's night stick.
Atkins, an inspector for the Virginia Department of Highways, testified that Thompson first approached the house swinging his night stick and was “very hostile" from the outset. During the discussion at the front door of the house, Atkins recalled reaching around his wife towards Thompson but claimed that Thompson anticipated the move and jumped forward. “1 never touched him,” Atkins claimed. “He hit my wife and knocked her glasses off.”
He insisted that Thompson had his revolver drawn on Jack Atkins “before he even approached” and said he struggled against going with the deputies under arrest because he felt he hadn't done anything wrong. “At no time did I ever have a hand on the night stick. At no time was I ever hit until I was on the ground." Atkins concluded.
