Although out-of-state passenger car travel increased slightly, overall travel on Virginia’s major highways in June continued to show a decline. the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation said today.
Travel on Virginia's interstate, arterial, and primary highways decreased 1.8 per cent compared to June of 1979. Out-of-state passenger car travel increased by 0.7 per cent, while Virginia passenger car travel was down 0.9 per cent, compared to the same month a year ago.
Commercial vehicle travel dropped 4.5 per cent in June, according to J. P. Mills Jr., the department's traffic and safety engineer.
The 1.8 per cent decline in June travel compared to a 2 per cent drop in June, 1979, the first time that travel had shown a decline on the state's highways in that gasolineshort period. The travel analysis was made from counts taken at 216 locations on the state’s interstate, arterial, and primary roads.
