Everyone who applies for a social security number must provide evidence of age, identity, and U. S. citizenship or lawful admission status, including young children, Bruce Hundley social security manager in Culpeper, said recently.

Parents sometimes have difficulty finding the required evidence for their children. They especially have trouble with the idea of providing evidence of identity, he said.

Proof of age is relatively easy—public or hospital record of birth recorded before age 6 or religious record of birth or baptism recorded before age 5. One of there documents will also establish citizenship, Hundley, said.
