No Earlier Experience
Under cross examination by Fletcher, Crossman stated that he’d spent eight years in the Coast Guard and had no police experience before joining the Rappahannock Sheriffs Department a year and a half ago. He verified that he did not have a search warrant when he went to the Atkins' home and noted that he told Thompson of Atkins’ offer to take them to his father only as Thompson was knocking at the front door.
Under extensive questioning as to the number of times Atkins was hit. Crossman said he'd seen the accused struck once with a slapjack and three times with the night stick.
“Couldn’t the two of you put handcuffs on him without hitting him four times?” asked Fletcher, sparking objections from Commonwealth’s Attorney Douglas Baumgardner that the deputies weren’t on trial.
