According to Mrs. Atkins, Thompson struck her, knocked her back against the door and broke her glasses. Then after her husband pulled Thompson into the house, the pair was joined by Crossman and the deputies wrestled Atkins outside, she said.
Mrs. Atkins stated that she saw from the window that "they had Levi on the ground beating him” and saw her husband struck four times with a blackjack. She said she called Jack Atkins and as he drove up, Thompson leaped over her husband and pulled his gun.
