our bus stopped at one of those government-sponsored cratfP^shfcps that are a formidable temptation to tourists ®in India. This one had an outstanding display of all kinds of antiques and contemporary artifacts, especially jewelry. Jaipur, it seems, has long been one of the world’s chief centers for the cutting and polishing of precious stones—not only stones of Indian origin but gems from all over the world. Outside the door of this emporium, a man squatted at a grindstone, actually polishing stones. Have you ever wondered how it is done—how such a small thing as a gemstone is held against the wheel? Now I know. I have on my desk a souvenir the gem-cutter gave me. a little stick with an amethyst attached to the end of it with a lump of hard wax.
