the most important rooms, the walls were completely covered with mosaics of colored glass and mirrorglass. One small chamber, opening off a larger reception-room, was lined with so many tiny mirrors that when the door was closed and a match struck inside the room, the whole ceiling sparkled like a starry sky. We marvelled at the intricate system of channels cut in some of the stone floors to carry water from the hill above for drinking and washing.
On our way back to the lower courtyard, where our elephants awaited us, we passed an elderly fakir exactly like those we have all seen in pictures. With his long grey hair, beard and mustaches, his pink and white robe, his staff and silver bowl, the marigold in his right hand, he fairly cried out to be photographed, but I feared that in fact he might resent it. Not so. When I made an enquiring gesture, he smiled and nodded and then posed to give me one of the most satisfying pictures of the whole trip.
