Beyond the garden, an unofficial footpath cut off the corner between a local byroad and the main road in front of the hotel. As we looked out, seven or eight women in a rainbow of saris filed along the path, presumably on their way to the bus and work. The image has stayed in our minds as a symbol of rural India.
