hills, we looked up at a spectacular pile of buildings crowning a near-cliff that rose three or four hundred feet above our heads. Among them, the Jai Mahal palace was the main objective of our visit, but with such a climb in the prevailing heat, I for one could not have reached it under my own power. -The problem, however, had been foreseen and solved.
As we got out of our bus, we found ourselves face to face with a whole troop of gaily caparisoned elephants—not just for fun this time but for the serious business of passenger transportation. With the help of a mounting platform ten or eleven feet high, we clambered aboard, four to an elephant, and sat facing ourwards, two by two, on padded wooden benches with a back-rest behind us and a reassuring iron bar hooked across our knees.
