Endurance- riding, an equine sport which originated in the west, is a form of horse racing in which horse and rider pit themselves against time while attempting to cover long distances—40 to 150 miles—of often rugged terrain. The sport, which is in many respects the long distance or marathon race of the horse world, requires no specific tack or riding apparel. The challenge? Riders must attempt to complete the course in a prescribed maximum time limit—24 hours for the 100-mile race, and 11.5 hours for the 50.
Patty and John Alexander of Flint Hill, who have participated in endurance riding competition for eight years now, are among a new generation of dedicated enthusiasts who are helping to establish endurance racing as one of the most increasingly popular equine sports in the east.
