“Our horses are rarely stabled, because of that, you won’t find endurance horses with the respiratory problems and bad habits from boredom that you tend to find with a race horse who is confined more often,” she explains.
Horses must pass a rigorous pre-vet examination before entering a race. A shoeing schedule must begin as early as eight months in advance of a race, say the Alexanders.
