“It takes a long time to see the results of your efforts,” she says. “You can barely begin training a horse until he’s four years old . . . horses can develop problems if they’re run too hard, too early. Young horses do well, but they can wash out at an early age. I like a horse that’s well trained from an early age—a horse that’s totally responsive.”
Misunderstood
“Sometimes people tend to misunderstand endurance riding,” according to Patty. They think that it’s harmful to the horse. But they don’t understand the capabilities of horses — long distance traveling is what God intended for horses—this is what they did for food and water when they ran wild on the plains.
"We’re asking a lot of our horses, but that’s what they were designed to do,” says Patty who feels that the endurance horse has a great deal more freedom and tends to lead a much healthier life than other kinds of racing horses.
