The finals were played at the court of Mr. and Mrs. ' Fanning Baumgardner in temperatures estimated as high as 120 degrees on the playing surface. The debilitating heat may have contributed toward the quality of the tennis played, which except for rare flashes of brilliance or luck, was remarkably indifferent.
The tournament remains one of the highlights of the crowded sports year in Rappahannock, surpassed only by the point-to-point races in early March and by the games of the high school baseball nine in those occasional years when it fields an excellent team. The level of the play is admittedly uneven, ranging usually from the absolutely rotten to the barely mediocre, but spirits are invariably high; and after the picnic luncheon, spirits are inevitably even higher.
Formally known as the. 25th Annual Mixed Doubles Invitational Handicap Whistle Cup Labor Day Tennis Tournament of Rappahannock County, the event is believed to have originated 17 or 18 years ago at the court of Mrs. Marta Tholand and the late Nils Tholand. Nevertheless the contest regularly is identified as the "25th annual” tournament because, as Mrs. Tholand explains, “it is such a very nice round number.”
This year 28 teams competed in the Sunday semi-finals. The GehringerLillard team won easily at the court of Dr. and Mrs. Werner Krebser, where play was marred by frequent bickering among the players, the umpires. and the linesmen. Except for this unseemly acrimony, the contests were unexceptional.
Things were much closer at the court of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Parrish, where the Exton team, mere et fils, won by a single game over a team
