After lunch at our hotel, we were brought back into the city of Jaipur. Virginia and I thought it one of the most attractive cities we had ever seen. The modern sections are agreeably laid out, airy, clean and spacious, with a wealth of trees and flowers. But the heart of Jaipur, perhaps a quarter or a fifth of the whole, is the walled city founded in 1728 by the greatest of Jaipur's princes, Sawai Jai Singh II. It seems to have been the world’s earliest example of city planning in modern times, though the blueprint is said to have been derived from ancient Hindu treatises on architecture. It is called the Pink City because, nearly a century after the original foundation, another maharajah had the city walls and the facades of all the main buildings, public and private, painted their present dusty-rose color.
As usual on this flying tour, we did not have time to visit all the sights listed in the travel literature, but I believe we saw the most important.
