talents, tne manarajan was a mathematician and astronomer of the first rank. Here in the heart of Jaipur he c'overed several acres of ground with a variety of astronomical instruments built of stone. With few exceptions, their individual purposes are indecipherable to the layman, and their scale is equally daunting. The tallest of these titanic instruments is a kind of sundial ninety feet high.
Close beside the observatory is the City Palace of the maharajahs of Jaipur, now a museum housing some of the treasures they accumulated over the years. The beauty of its architectural detail is matched by the fabulous collection of rugs, costumes, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, pottery, arms and armor. It is impossible to retain much detail after a visit of a bare hour or thereabouts, but one item is unforgettable.
