City, on one side of the main north-south street we traversed on our way to Amber and back, stands the Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Winds. It; is so jcalled. no doubt, because it is all windows and turns out to be only one room deep from back to front. But it was perfectly fitted for its apparent purpose of providing the ladies of the maharajah’s court with a shielded grandstand from which to view processions and what not in the main street. In any case, the five-story, pyramidal facade of carved stone is an architectural gem.
