Battery Stolen
From Truck
Thieves hit two unlikely spots over the holiday weekend - under the hood of a Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department truck and a gas tank of the community’s rescue squad vehicle.
According to Rappahannock deputy John Godlewski, firemen discovered Monday morning. September 1. that a battery had been stolen from Sperryville's water tank truck. Later that night at about 10:45. a Sperryville citizen observed a pick-up truck in front of the rescue squad building and saw someone taking the cap off the squad truck's gas tank in apparent preparation for syphoning gasoline.
The citizen called for help and with assistance from friends, pursued the pick-up truck for approximately an hour before the vehicle was finally stopped by Virginia State Trooper C. A. Moore.
The 1978 Ford pick-up was identified stolen in Fauquier County. according to Godlewski. He noted that police found a battery in the truck. “But the problem is that we can’t positively identify it as the battery taken from the Sperryville fire truck. One battery looks just like another unless it has serial numbers recorded,” the deputy explained. Godlewski added that the sheriff s department was still investigating the incident.
To date, charges lodged against Larry Wayne Dodson of The Plains, the driver of the pick-up. include breaking and entering by the Rappahannock sheriff's department and possession of a stolen vehicle by Trooper Moore. Bond was set for Dodson at $8,000.
