When the ordinance review is taken up again, Estes proposed, “we ought to think about adding something on hazardous wastes.” He noted that the recent edition of the Piedmont Environmental Council's newsletter detailed the dangers involved with disposal of uranium tailings.
With "a particularly hot spot in the county . . in the Woodville area.” said Estes, it's possible that uranium mining may come to Rappahannock. "I’ve seen a man with a Geiger counter in the last 30 days working (on that Woodville hot spot),” Estes reported.
"We could have a nightmare overnight,” he warned, pointing out that East coast uranium deposits are held to be twice as rich as those on the West coast.
Miller interjected that the county's zoning ordinance already covers mining.
“I don’t think it addresses the hazards involved,” Estes countered, adding that uranium tailings can contaminate water supplies, posing a dangerous health hazard.
