After lunch at the Chandela, another short flight brought us back to Agra. As we had to change planes there for our next overnight stop, Jaipur, we were given a chance of seeing the Taj Mahal in a different light from the midday glare of three days before—sunset light this time. But first we stopped off at the Holiday Inn, no less, for what was billed as tea. There were lots of goodies besides, but for me with my streaming cold it was the tea that mattered. I shall always think of it as the best cup of tea I ever tasted. The Taj Mahal was indeed worth seeing in the evening light. (I have been told that moonlight is best of all, but that was not attainable for us.)

Then to the airport for our next hop. By the time we were shepherded to the plane it was quite dark. So it took a few moments tq grasp that our plane was a little old propeller-driven affair. For most of us, it had probably been twenty years or more since we had ridden in that kind of aircraft. But we reflected that they were pretty reliable, and anyway we had no choice. After 747’s and the like, the plane seemed appallingly cramped. I think every seat was filled. But we reached Jaipur in good style. Late as we were, Clarks Amer Hotel, on the southern fringe of the city, offered us the customary welcome. Most of the party, I assume, went down to another splendid feast, but the Wormalds did not.
