In 35 minutes set aside for curriculum discussion at the close of last Tuesday’s special meeting, the Rappahannock school board clarified decisions reached in October on expansion of class offerings at the county high school. Curriculum changes were approved by consensus, not by vote, at the October 28 session, and it was emphasized that implementation was dependent upon classroom expansion, according to Newbill Miller.
The minutes of that meeting list the requirement of three units of math for graduation and the addition of blocks of clerk typist I and II, dual tracking with honors and general English for grades 8-12, a second foreign language (either German or Spanish) and a remedial math lab as curriculum changes.
“I received a telephone call from a person whose opinion I very much respect and there’s a question in her mind regarding use of the word ’tracking,’’ said Miller.
The unidentified woman cited a court case where tracking had been declared illegal and discriminatory and suggested the school board check with its attorney
