According to Turner, he's been locating water since he was about 15 years old—just as his grandfather did before him. An employee of Eldon Farms in Woodville, Turner has pinpointed several well sites on that property in the past few months, according to reports Miller said he’s received from Nelson Lane, owner of Eldon Farms.
Turner said that he found the well for his Front Royal home with his divining rods through 415 feet of limestone. In addition, he said, he’s located water for three other houses in the area.
According to Turner, his galvanized wire is more accurate than the traditional dowsing rod fashioned out of peach tree limbs that points to the ground over a water source. “I can’t tell how deep the water is.” he said of the she for Washington’s hopedfor new well. “But the water’s there, close to the surface and a lot of it.”
The water witch was at a loss to explain his unusual talent. ‘‘They say it has something to do with body chemistry.” he volunteered.
On Tuesday, the new well site was approved by health department district engineer Ken Arthur. Well driller Larry LeHew of Front Royal will begin work on Wednesday.
According to Brad Fisher, town treasurer and chemist with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission who’s been looking for short-term solutions to the water crisis, it will be just a matter of days before the town’s system is again in operation if water is struck at the site Turner indicated. The owner of the lot where the dowser thinks he found water has agreed to sell the land to the town. The site is just opposite the old well, making extension of the lines a simple and fairly inexpensive proposition, according to Fisher.
