corners of the globe: to Africa. Asia, and the new world. Dowsing or water witching has been a part of American culture since the beginning of colonization, but it is usually associated with the southern mountains.
The dowser employs most often a forked stick of special material: hazelwood. peach tree, whalebone, nylon or metal are commonly preferred. With his palms upward and the end pointed forward and slightly upraised he traverses the ground until the force of the pull causes the single end of the stick to bend downward. Less common dowsing instruments are a sort of pendulum suspended from a chain and two pieces of Lshaped angle rods.
There are two explanations advanced for the success of dowsing: either the substance being sought exerts an attraction on the material in the divining rod; or the dowser is gifted with a psychic power which causes his subconscious to direct his hands. Extensive scientific testing has not proven the practice to have any measureable merit: however, some scientists believe that dowsing needs further study under natural, rather than laboratory conditions.
