Big yellow school buses will roll again next Thursday, carrying loads of Rappahannock youngsters to the start of classes for the 198182 school year. While the buses have set idle all summer, transportation superintendent AH>e Huff has been anything but.
During his summer "vacation,” Huff has gone over his 21 bus fleet with a fine tooth comb to ensure that when the engines turn over Thursday morning, they'll turn over in vehicles that are as safe as’ he can possibly make them.
"It would be a right smart job if I didn’t do anything but take the wheels off," said Huff, explaining that he pulls every wheel on each bus unless the vehicle is new or has recently had its brakes replaced. He keeps detailed maintenance charts on every bus, checking the written record rather than his memory for information on when they were last serviced.
“We go over everything,” Huff emphasized, ticking off a long list: grease jobs, oil change, windshield wipers, lights, horn, practically every moving part in the vehicle.
