To the editor:
Well it happened. The watermelon that was growing in the flower bed in front of Nature’s Foods in Washington was taken last weekend. When it came up last spring, a volunteer, we said “oh. how cute” and let it grow. We had to keep it trimmed to keep it from smothering the other plants and herbs in the bed and were delighted to see two baby watermelons coming along. Well, one disappeared last month and now the other one is gone too.
Maybe it was naive to think it wouldn’t be taken, but we had thought we could have our watermelon and eventually eat it too. I still like to think that petty theft like that isn’t common here but someone, somewhere is wondering what to do with a stolen and not quite ripe watermelon.
