Lamma also had some practical advice on dress for helping children enjoy their first year of school: "Shoes are sometimes a problem. Children should have clothes and shoes that are comfortable. If your child has one or two years before starting Kindergarten, there are some things you can do now to make that time easier. Camille Harris, director of Sursum Corda School and Day Care Center, listed for us some of the skills that parents can start to teach now in their young children:
Sharing - this is a very important concept for young children to learn, according to Harris. It certainly doesn’t come naturally, so parents must teach it constantly.
Sitting still - Harris told us that many children have never sat still by the time they start school. Reading to them or working on projects with them while they sit quietly will help them learn this. ' Self-Help skills - These are little tasks like zipping and unzipping, buttoning and unbuttoning, putting on coats, putting on shoes, lining up, eating meals alone and sitting at a table, that parents sometimes fail to teach.
The indulgent parent may find it easier to do everything for his child; the busy teacher will not have the time. Some children will never have put away their own toys when they start school, Harris told us. “This is something that has to start when they’re real little," she said. “Otherwise they get extremely indignant at the idea."
Harris, who has taught at the Kindergarten level as well as founding and directing Sursum Corda, had this advice for parents of preschool children: “Try to find a situation where your children will have some structure. Nursery school. Sunday School, summer Bible school - anything that will give them a head start on having to follow a schedule and deal with other adults and children.”
