Ioul Harvest Down Demand for Rappahannock's summer apples is up, primarily due to crop damage elsewhere. According to Dr. Calvin Lyons from VPI’s Winchester Fruit Laboratories, the apple harvest nationwide is expected to total 192 million bushels this year compared to 210 million bushels harvested last year, a decline of 756,000,000 pounds of fruit. The major reductions in yield will come in New York and Michigan and to a lesser degree in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, he said.
Matched against the nation and the rest of the state, Rappahannock has an excellent crop. Lyons noted. 'To the south of us. it's also excellent but to the north and west, late freezes reduced yields,” he added.
Dr. Bob Horsburgh, superintendent of the Fruit Lab. was a little more reticent with his predictions. "Orchardists don’t like us to comment until they get their crop in boxes in the warehouse. It’s like counting your chickens before they hatch.
