Robert Mahlbacher, managing director of the Rappahannock Players, announces that the fall production will be "Harvey”, the famous comedy hit that captured the imagination of Broadway theatregoers for over four years, and a Pulitzer Prize as well. This is a play about an imaginary rabbit, six feet one and a half inches tall, whose constant companionship with what is probably the world’s most ingratiating tippler, has created more laughter than any play of modern times. It will open at the Country Playhouse at Wakefield School in Huntly, on October 2 for four evening performances and a matinee.
The unseen rabbit hero of this comedy wasn’t born; he was discovered. Elwood P. Dowd, his discoverer, is a calm lovable bachelor, given to sociable—and constant—drinking. Elwood has traded the reality of the world, which irked him, for the illusion of a rabbit; and he has no regrets.
For his widowed sister and her eligible daughter, however, Elwood’s companion has its distinct social embsrassments. Driven once too often. Sister decides it is time to enroll Elwood in a sanitarium. But Sister, who isn’t so unlike Elwood that she hasn’t had glimpses of Harvey the Hare herself.
