In response to Baumgardner's objections on the relevance of that line of questioning, Douglas said he was trying to show “who Mr. Marx is and who he works for. I've been accused of shooting Peter Marx. I don't know no Peter Marx. I never met Peter Marx in my life. I'm going to show who he is,” Douglas maintained, pointing to the witness and claiming that Marx had tried to kill him as well as committing various other felonies.
In response to Douglas' charge that Marx had claimed he was Jesus-Christ, Marx said he'd never represented himself as anyone else but Peter Marx. He added, however, that he’d tried to achieve union with Christ by following his teachings.

Under cross examination by Douglas. Marx acknowledgd that he'd taken the defendant to John D. Marks’ weekend home in Orlean in order to meet the writer and end Douglas' confusion over his identity. According to Marx, John D. Marks was not at home and so they didn't enter the house.
