In the opinion of the Rappahannock News staff, these were the top ten local stories for 1981.
1. Land Value*— Preliminary Figures for the county’s new 100 percent fair market value assessment completed in 1981 showed total value of taxable property as S241,140.400. a staggering increase of more than 2000 percent over the current discounted assessment of SI1.S82.82I.
The worth of land climbed highest. going from $5,430,390 under discounted values to $143,769,500 compared to an increase on buildings fri>m $6,152,431 to $97,370,900.
The supervisors voted to delay implementation of fair market value assessments until 1982, however. In addition, assessment figures won't be final until review by a board of equalization which begins meetings in^anuary.
2. Land Use—To offset what they expect will be a shift in the tax burden on to the land under the new 100 percent fair market value assessment. , the supervisors adopted countywide use value taxation in 1981. effective in 1982. To date. 709 tracts have been submitted for acceptance into the deferred tax program.
