The defendant maintained that Carpenter had also warned him against visiting the residence of Helen Obenshein.

Carpenter said that upon the request of a U. S. district judge who was a close friend of the Obenshein family, he’d warned Douglas that the Chesterfield police would be called if he appeared on the property and that he would be charged with trespassing. In justifying the message relayed to the defendant, Carpenter maintained that a woman whose husband had been killed in a plane crash just two days before didn't need to have Douglas knocking on the door, demanding to sec the deceased man who he claimed was alive and well and living in the basement of the house.
