On Monday, the WSA formally approved the facilities plan for a collection system of individual septic tank effluent pumps (STEP) with pressure lines leading to a package treatment plant, an option that was considered at a public hearing in March. With the $1.4 million from EPA and $500,000 in block grant money, monthly user fees for the system will fall in the $ 10-$ 1 5 range considered affordable by community residents.

The engineering firm has recommended that solids which must be pumped from the individual septic tanks on a three to five year cycle be taken to treatment facilities elsewhere rather than handled by Sperryville's proposed package treatment plant. On Monday, WSA secretary Bob Dennis reported that representatives from the town of Culpeper have indicated they would be “delighted” to handle Sperryville's septage at the town’s over-built treatment plant.
