Cautious Supporters
In addition, some of the more cautious among Mr. Davis’ advisers $re leery of the senate gambit.
They reason the Democrats have been so badly shattered by recent events it may be impossible for the party to put together a winning campaign this year under any circumstances. If that is the case, and if Mr. Davis should run and lose, it might be fatal to his chances of winning the governorship three years hence.
This school of thought holds it would be wiser for him to stand aside this year, help another nominee, but stick to the original gubernatorial game plan.
But others are more optimistic. They do not agree the party has been more than superficially injured, and they are convinced Mr. Davis is just the man—indeed, may be the only man—who could recreate the coalition which brought the Democrats their stunning victories of last year.
