Women Jailers?
Sheriff W. A. Buntin asked if there were any objections to employing women as correctional officers.
It may create problems, Bottley replied, pointing out that the law calls for male prisoners to be afforded a degree of privacy from female observation.
Regulations require that correctional officers check prisoners on a regular basis. Could a female correctional officer check male prisoners through the intercom system which must be installed in the cell blocks? Buntin asked.
“That's a bad practice," Bottley replied, emphasizing that visual observation was necessary to ensure that prisoners weren't answering for each other. A female correctional officer could announce loudly that she was entering the cell block, he said, and if a male prisoner was using one of the exposed commodes he could ask her to wait.
